A cluster of koppie located next to the eastern border of Serengeti national park. It is a destination for game drives, and a refuge for animals and plants from the harsh elements of the Serengeti, which may at times include droughts and fires.

It is also a good spot to find lions, many of whom can be found resting atop the rocks or under shade when the sun's too hot.

What to do there?Game drives or view it from above through air safaris. For a list of other attractions to see in the area, please see the attractions page.

Best time to visit? The last two months of the year, when the area is swarming with the migrating wildebeest and Zebra, though they may also be found south of here during the months of January through to March.

Location of Barafu kopjesBarafu kopjes are located near the border between Serengeti national park and Ngorongoro conservation area. It is also a few kilometres south of the early stages of the Ngare Nanyuki river.

For more information on this location, please see the map below.

How to get there?Getting there by air would require use of the larger Seronera airstrip to get there, before using a prearranged vehicle for the rest of the way.

The more scenic, land based route, would require about a three hour drive from the outer edges of the park, but could also take more than a week if planning to visit the multitude of attractions in the park.

There is no discrimination as to the vehicle type to use, but 4x4s and SUVs do perform better. For more information on park fees and tariffs, please see the TANAPA website.
