Among the first discoveries of Lower Paleolithic sites in East Africa, found in 1928 by Dr. Louis Leakey and dating back to about 1 million years ago.

It is believed to have been an Acheulian site, or stone age tools factory — with several being found at the site near the Kariandusi river bed.

Formed when the rising lake waters drove pre-historic men from their lake-side home and buried all the tools and weaponry they left behind.
