Kyarano dam

A small man made lake near the town of Butiama that was created at the request of the late Mwalimu J. K. Nyerere, both for fish and as a water source for some of his farming projects (unverified). It is still used today for the same purposes.

What to do there?Nothing much in the form of tourism, rather than just admire it.

Best time to visitAnytime of the year, as it is right next to a major road heading to Butiama - that at the time of writing is being upgraded to a tarmac one.

Location of Kyarano damThe dam is located south of and within view of the small town of Butiama - a few kilometres off the shores of lake Victoria of Tanzania. There are hotels, restaurants and shops available nearby in Butiama.

For more information on its location, please see the map below.

How to get there?By vehicle, driving from Fort Ikoma gate, Mwanza or Musoma. It is about a 3 hour drive from Mwanza, 2 from Musoma, and another 3 from fort Ikoma gate, though it may take less once the roads have been upgraded.

Any type of vehicle can be used to get there, though there are passenger buses from Arusha (through Serengeti and Ngorongoro), Mwanza and Musoma that may be used. If coming from Mwanza or Musoma, then you would have to drop off at the small town of Kukirango, and get minibus to the place.
