Mwalimu nyereres home

    A compound in the small town of Butiama that used to be the childhood home of the first president of Tanzania - Mwalimu J. K. Nyerere and several of his ancestors, such as his father chief Nyerere. It is also the location of his Mausoleum, and the whole compound is open to visitors, with the exception of a few areas.

    The compound is also where he lived after retirement and also bears several key locations from his life, such as where he was born, the graves of both his parents, houses of his father and his wives, grain silos etc.

    What to do thereLearn about the history of the founding father, and see where he and several of his relatives were buried. If feeling up to it, then say a prayer for him, in the Mausoleum.

    The compound also gives you a chance to see how he and several of his ancestors lived.

    Best time to visitAnytime of the year, as there are tarmac roads from Mwanza and most regions of Tanzania, all the way to the doorstep.

    Location of Mwalimu nyereres homeThe compound is located next to and north of the Nyerere Museum, in the small town of Butiama - of north western Tanzania. It is a few dozen kilometres distance from the shores of lake Victoria, about a 2 hour drive from Musoma, and about a 3 hour drive from Mwanza.

    How to get there? By vehicle, driving there from any nearby town or from Arusha. There are passenger buses from these places as well, with the ones from Arusha going through Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

    If coming from Mwanza, or Musoma, then you would have to get off at Kukirango and take a minibus from there.
