Schreuderhuis of Stellenbosch village museum 1
The oldest documented and restored town house in South Africa, built in 1709 by Sebastian Schröder — a German mercenary soldier for the Dutch East India Company.

It is also one of few houses to survive the first great fire of Stellenbosch.

The original structure used Cape Dutch architecture — a thatched roof, white walls, wooden shutters and a window with small glass panes inside that. Glass and wood were scarcely used their high price at the time.

Since then its ownership changed a number of times, ending with the Lubbe family who sold it to the Stellenbosch museum.

Today, it has been restored and serves as a house museum showing the lifestyle and architecture of the area's pioneering families.

Schreuder is the Dutch pronunciation of Schröder.
