Voc Kruithuis museum of Stellenbosch 1
The only surviving powder magazine in South Africa, built from 1776 to 1777 by the Dutch East India Company to store its supply of ammunition.

However, the area remained peaceful and as the years went by, its military importance declined — giving way for its use as a local market and remaining so for almost a century.

In 1943, it became a museum after extensive renovations but this didn't last very long. In 1971 the building was taken over by Stellenbosch museum for its collection of fire arms, cannons and military equipment used in the town's past.

Today it is a museum showing the military history of Stellenbosch.

The name stands for Vereenigde Oost Indiesche Company Kruithuis which is Dutch for 'United East India Company Powder House'.
