One of the entry point into
mount Kilimanjaro national park, located in its southern foothills.
It is also the location of several offices of the park authorities (TANAPA), and an administrative starting point for all hikers using the
Machame trekking route to the summit.
Normally, all Climbers on this route would be required to complete necessary registration at the gate before beginning their climb or entering the park.
As the Machame route is used for ascent only, the gate is smaller when compared to
Marangu gate that serves both ascending and descending climbers.
What to do thereHiking, registration of climbers, payment of park fees.

Location of Machame gateMachame gate is situated in the remote suburb of Machame, at the southern foothills of mount Kilimanjaro.
Despite its location, the roads that lead up to the gate are all paved, making the journey to the area easy regardless of the vehicle used.
There are a few scattered houses in the area, though any large shops would be hard to find nearby.
The gate is at the edge of the park's montane forest, though the area outside isn't devoid of trees — courtesy of the strict laws against deforestation in the area.
The area receives high amounts of rainfall throughout the year and there are a few hotels nearby for accommodation before the climb.
If heading for the summit, the next destination after this is
Machame hut campsite.
How to get thereBy hiking, cycling or vehicle. There are passenger buses to Machame from Moshi.
