Seneto mini gate

Ngorongoro conservation area, Tanzania

One of several mini gates that control access into Ngorongoro crater of northern Tanzania. However, unlike the major gates it is already inside the conservation area and only serves as an inspection point for those descending into the crater.

The Seneto route is for descent, and only specific vehicles may enter the crater, mostly due to the steep walls and muddy roads. You also need crater entry permits.

What to do there?Get your permits, equipment and vehicle checked before entering the crater. Or if not descending into it, there is a viewpoint next to the gate from where you could get magnificent views of the crater.

Best time to visit?Any time of the year, with more emphasis towards the dry seasons of July to December every year. A visit during the end of the year may enable you to see the wildebeest migration as well.

When done, you could visit the other attractions in the vicinity as well (see section below after map).

Location of Seneto mini gateThe Seneto the mini gate is located on the western crater rim Ngorongoro, visible on the right-hand of the road when driving from Loduare gate to Olduvai gorge. There is a ranger post next to it, along with hotels, campsites and an air strip.

How to get there?By vehicle, about a 30 minutes drive from Loduare gate, and an hour and a half from the Olduvai gorge museum. You can use a rental, private or tours and travel one, and there is no preference of 4 x 4s unless if intending to enter the crater.
