One of the entry points into mount Kilimanjaro national park.

It exclusively serves as the starting for the Umbwe trekking route — an ascent only one that is less used when compared to others like the Marangu route.

Umbwe gate also serves as an administrative check point — where those going into the park have to register, and prove they meet the necessary requirements e.g. having a registered guide and equipment.

Due to its low usage, the gate and its facilities are smaller in size.

What to do therePay for park fees and permits — a no cash system, of credit/debit cards.

Or get more information about the park, bird watching, game viewing, hiking.

Best time to visitThe warmer periods of the year, usually July to February

Location of Umbwe gateUmbwe gate lies in the southern foothills of mount Kilimanjaro and in the rural suburb of Umbwe.

This is a sparsely populated area with a few scattered houses, most of which have small farms next to them.

It also is inside the montane forest, about a hundred metres from the edge.

There are a few hotels nearby.

Any good shops would be hard to find in the area, so make sure to have all that you need beforehand.

At the time of writing, the road that leads up to the gate is unpaved, but well maintained.

Most people going through this gate would be headed to Umbwe cave camp which is the first campsite on the route.

How to get thereBy vehicle, less than an hour's drive from Moshi.
