Obsidian caves

A string of small caves in Hell's gate national park, made of dark colored and shiny rocks — or Obsidian.

They were formed as a result of rapid cooling of lava, as it came into contact with the lake's water.

What to do there?Game viewing, with a number of animals to see within or around the caves themselves.

Also hiking, biking or horse riding through the area.

Best time to visit?Any time of the year

Location of Obsidian cavesThe obsidian caves are on the eastern end of Hell's gate national park, along the buffalo circuit.

How to get thereBy vehicle, hiking, horse riding or biking — from any location in the park, with the nearest entrance being Elsa gate.

The nearest town is Naivasha, a few hours northwest of Nairobi, by bus or train.
