The first of four military forts built by the south African republic, shortly before the second Anglo-Boer war — to protect its capital Pretoria.

It was one of three built by a German engineering firm named Krupp — a half octagon shaped structure with five sides.

The smaller 4 sides held most of the artillery and faced away from the city and in the direction the enemy was likely to approach from.

The fort was also equipped with electricity — considered modern at the time.

However, its use declined over the years and today it has been renovated to serve as a museum showing a history of the second Anglo-Boer war, and period after it.

Most of its collection is housed inside the fort's old rooms, each labeled in Afrikaans and bearing a different section.

Part of the fort was also restructured to include an ampitheatre where plays are occasionally shown.
