Mwalimu nyerere museum

    The Mwalimu Nyerere museum is a building in the small town of Butiama, Tanzania that showcases the life story of the first president of Tanzania. It is located next to and south of his actual retirement home, bearing several of his personal belongings, such as trophies, clothes, cars etc.

    What to do therelearn about the life story and struggles of the founding father, before visiting his actual retirement home - where you could see where some of the actual events took place.

    There are several hotels and lodges and restaurants in the area, including ones owned by family members such as Mwitongo lodge.

    Best time to visitAny time of the year, as there are tarmac roads all the way from Mwanza to the doorstep.

    Location of Mwalimu nyerere museumThe Mwalimu Nyerere museum is located in Butiama district of the North Western region of Tanzania called Mara. The area is quite small, in fact its population is small enough to be village, but it was upgraded to a district in honor of Nyerere.

    It also lies in the middle of a community that is partly made up of people that have lived under the rule of both chief Nyerere, and his son J.K Nyerere and if you are lucky you may get to talk to one of them (villagers) for a more up close tale of the times.

    How to get thereBy any type of vehicle, driving there from Mwanza, Musoma of even fort Ikoma gate of Serengeti national park. It is about a 4 hour drive from Mwanza, using a private vehicle, though you could also use one of the passenger buses from Arusha (through Ngorongoro and Serengeti) or ones from Mwanza or Musoma.

    If coming from Mwanza, then you would have to get off at the small town of Kukirango and take one of the minibus to Butiama.
