McGregor museum of Kimberley as seen from the front 1
A museum in Kimberley, South Africa showing its history, and named after Alexander McGregor the former mayor of Kimberley.

It started in 1907 with a small collection donated by Mcregor's widow Margaret at a smaller two storey building in the same city, but moved to its current location in 1973 as the collection grew larger.

The current building used to be a Sanatorium built in 1897 as a large two-storey complex with Edwardian era architecture — unplastered red brick walls, an all round balcony at the front and sides of both floors, a corrugated iron roof and gardens all around.

Over the years, the sanatorium served as a hotel, convent school and a refuge for Cecil John Rhodes during the 1899 siege of Kimberley — while the building was still under final constructions.

Inside are displays, photos and artifacts about Kimberley and its history, as well as the area's cultural and natural history including a collection of fossils, rock art, weapons used in past wars and taxidermied animals.

The museum also has a number of smaller satellites in the same city, including the Duggan Cronin gallery, and the McGregor museum memorial — at the museum's former building.
