One of South Africa's largest museums, situated in Newtown Johannesburg — showcasing African culture and history.

It was established in 1933 at different location but only moved to its current building in the 90's — the former fruits and vegetable market, a 3 storey mall like complex built in 1913.

Inside are a large number of items about African culture and history including past equipment, arts and crafts, clothing, model traditional houses, jewellery, bead works, furniture, scenes and photos on the city's past as well as its transformation, archaeology, geology, and Ghandi's resistance in the country.

There also is an exhibit on Nelson Mandela's trial, as well as the Bensusan museum with antique photography equipment used in South Africa's past, along with photos taken by them; And a geology museum with over 17,000 rock and mineral samples and mining tools used in the past.

Outside are the Mary Fitzgerald square, along with other vibrant city establishments that make up Johannesburg's cultural precinct.
